An estimated 32 million individuals in the United States live with food allergies, including nearly 11 percent of the adult population and around 7.6 percent of children. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, the prevalence of food allergies in newborns has increased over the last 20 years.

Children are most commonly impacted by milk allergies, in addition to egg and peanut allergies. Peanuts also rank as a common allergen with adults, although shellfish is the main culprit when it comes to adult food allergies. Approximately 1 million Americans live with a sesame allergy, one of the most rapidly developing allergies in the country. In 2021, sesame was officially recognized as a major allergen.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 maintains a list of the eight most common allergenic foods for the US population. In addition to the above-mentioned foods, common allergens include fish, tree nuts, wheat, and soybeans.
